Priestess in Rameau's "Hippolyte et Aricie"

Madelaine sings the role of a Priestess of Diana in four performances of Rameau’s opera "Hippolyte et Aricie" on February 27 and 28 and March 1 and 2, 2019. Madelaine is also a featured Baroque dancer in the opera. The historically informed production is a collaboration between the Case Western Reserve University Historical Performance Practice Program and the Cleveland Institute of Music Opera Theater.

Description from Cleveland Institute of Music:

ABOUT

Rameau’s sumptuous opera Hippolyte et Aricie takes us into a magical world of heroes and lovers, goddesses and monsters, forest creatures, sailors and hunters. Its rich orchestration and thrilling vocal writing tells a compelling story (based on Racine’s Phèdre) of the young lovers Hippolyte and Aricie kept apart by their devotion to the goddess Diana and by Phèdre’s illicit love for her stepson. Co-produced by CIM and CWRU, the opera is staged in period style with baroque dance and a baroque orchestra. All performances include projected English text.

Soprano Soloist in "Mastering the New: From Mature Rameau to Youthful Haydn"

In this preview performance for the spring 2019 production of “Hippolyte et Aricie,” Madelaine will sing Aricie’s aria “Ou suis je…Quel doux concerts” with the Case Western Reserve University Baroque Orchestra.

Description from the Baroque Orchestra:

When Jean-Philippe Rameau premiered his first opera, Hippolyte et Aricie, at age 50, opera audiences were stunned. His brilliant orchestration, dissonances and virtuosity delighted many, while others were appalled by his lack of deference to his great predecessor, Jean-Baptiste Lully. By its third revival in 1757, the opera was still controversial, but tastes were evolving as listeners sought clearer lighter textures. That same year, Joseph Haydn, age 25, took up his first job as music director, and shortly thereafter he began exploring these textures in new genres, particularly the string quartet and symphony. The juxtaposition of these two maters’ “new” styles in one concert is revealing, capturing the best of two musical worlds.

Free and open to the public. Paid parking available in the Ford Avenue garage, the Severance Hall garage or at the meters along Bellflower Road and East Blvd.

to the human voice. Surprisingly, works featuring just violin
and voice are rare. In this program, the artists present original
works and arrangements of pieces that showcase the happy
marriage of the violin and the soprano voice. From madrigals
by Monteverdi to works from the 21st century, the duo traces
the instruments’ romance through history to create an
enthralling musical tale!

Madelaine performs the role of Aglante (and chorus) in Lully's opera Cadmus et Hermione.

Amherst Early Music Festival; Drew Minter, stage director; Adam Pearl, conductor; Aaron Sheehan, vocal coach.

Location: Connecticut College, Cummings Arts Center 270 Mohegan Avenue, New London, CT 06320

From the Amherst Early Music website:
"With Cadmus et Hermione, in 1673, Lully and poet Philippe Quinault invented a new type of entertainment, the tragédie lyrique. With its plot of amorous intrigue, Cadmus et Hermione involves thwarted high-born lovers, mythological beasts, numerous gods and goddesses attempting to control their liaison, and comic servants with amorous designs of their own. There are several excellent roles for baritones (Lully had yet to create leading roles for haute-contre) and sopranos (possible for higher mezzos), as well as roles for countertenors and tenors. The opera project is fully costumed and staged.  It includes instruction by Drew Minter in period acting and performance techniques, and singers also take part in masterclasses with Aaron Sheehan and Jason McStoots."
