Please join soprano Madelaine Matej for her lecture-recital on the character Eurydice as an operatic heroine. This presentation is the culmination of two years of research through both the Powell Scholars Program and the Honors Program at University of the Pacific, including trips to Italy and Germany. Madelaine will trace Eurydice's appearances through a sampling of operas from the years 1600 to 1993, analyzing Eurydice' importance in each piece and what this means for women in operas everywhere.
Repertoire excerpts are selected from the operas of Peri, Caccini, Monteverdi, Landi, Rossi, Charpentier, Telemann, Gluck, Haydn, Offenbach, Krenek, Casella, Birtwistle, and Glass.
Reception to follow in the Choral Rehearsal Hall, courtesy of the Powell Scholars Powell Scholars Program
